The Department was established at the Faculty of Political Science and International Relations in Banská Bystrica on June 1, 2007. The basic sense, content and aim of the Department are based on the knowledge of security theories, security studies and approaches offered to students. The main emphasis lies on the analysis of the contemporary world security, on the theoretical and methodological starting points of the research and the study of a new security theory, on security policy of NATO, EU and the Slovak Republic.
The Department participates on the creation of students specific characteristics within the discipline of the International Relations and the Political Science, using the system of compulsory and compulsory-optional courses: the Security Policy – theoretical framework, the Security Policy of the EU and the SR, the Conflicts and Crisis in the Contemporary World. A special attention is paid to the current world conflicts. The system of lectures and seminars is supported by the scientific research of the academic staff and the PhD students.
The Department participates on the specific projects related to the security science development since its establishment. One of the projects aims at the preparation of the annual international conference „Security Forum", that offers the environment for the academics and specialists to discuss the current security issues in the Slovak Republic and over the world. Another project aims at the establishment of the Centre of Excellence focusing on the research of the national and international security, following the Centre of Excellence of the Crisis Management. The Centre of Excellence will offer a special simulation and prognostic workplace.
The broadening of the Security Studies framework is closely connected with the fact that two of the current disciplines – International Relations and Political Science – vanish their qualification for the interconnection between the Security and the International Relations, International Law, Political Science, Political Geography, History and Language Programme. This background has enabled the formation of teaching and research intentions of the Department into the form of a unique workplace not only within the Slovak Republic, but also within the Central Europe. The Security Issues are lectured and researched here in a broad context, not only as a military and non-military security, but as a potential and prospective trans-disciplinary scientific discipline – the Security Science. The structure of lectures and research is comparable to the prominent workplaces dealing with this discipline abroad.
The graduate's profile after completing the series of the courses on the Department of Security Studies will be formed as a ability to exercise the theoretical knowledge fully in the Slovak and worldwide academic environment. It can be exercised also within the foreign security institutions if necessary to apply the theoretical, leading and manager activities.
