Stay of a third country national:

  • Temporary residence permit – business, employment, study, special activities, research and development, family reunification, meeting of work obligations within the Civil Armed Police Forces, granted status of a Slovak national living abroad, or granted status of a long-term resident in another European Union Member State
  • Permanent residence permit – a permanent residence permit for 5 years, a permanent residence permit for an unlimited period, a long-term residence permit
  • Tolerated stay

Stay of a European Union citizen:

  • Stay for 3 months from the entry in the territory of the Slovak Republic – holder of a valid identity card or travel document – without any other conditions and formalities
  • Residence registration of a European Union citizen
  • Permanent residence permit of a European Union citizen

Residence permit for a family member of a European Union citizen:

  • Stay for 3 months from the entry in the territory of the Slovak Republic – holder of a valid travel document accompanies a European Union citizen or joins him/her
  • Residence registration for a family member of a European Union citizen – only if the European Union citizen (in direct relation) has a registered residence permit or permanent residence in the territory of the Slovak Republic.
  • Permanent residence permit for a family member of a European Union citizen

Reporting residence

Reporting the residence of a foreigner after entering the territory of the Slovak Republic

  • with arranged accommodation in a facility – the facility is obliged to report the stay (hotel, hostel, guest house ...
  • with arranged accommodation in a private accommodation – there is an obligation to report the residence of a foreigner at the applicable office of the Department of the Foreign Police of the Police Force based on the address of residence in the territory of the Slovak Republic.
    • A third-country national: within 3 working days of the date of entry to the territory of the Slovak Republic
    • A citizen of the European Union and a family member of a citizen of the European Union: within 10 working days of the date of entry to the territory of the Slovak Republic

The accommodating facility or the foreigner fills in the form “Reporting residence” and ensures its handover/delivery to the applicable office of the Department of the Foreign Police of the Police Force.

NOTE: Pursuant to the Act on Residence of Foreigners (No. 404/2011 Coll.), the foreigner is obliged to sign the completed form when reporting the residence location.

Location: Foreigner’s Police Departmentis located at the Sládkovičova 25. It is situated in the southern part of the city of Banská Bystrica in area called Radvaň. It is possible to reach the destination via public transport with buses n. 2/4/21 from the bus station in front of the faculty (Národná). The exit bus station is called Podháj SZU.

Residence document/card

You must pay an administrative fee of 4,50 € for the issuance of the temporary residence permit document. The residence document can be obtained under a fast-track procedure within two working days for an administrative fee of EUR 24.50. After being issued, the residence document can be delivered to an address within the territory of the SR for an administrative fee of EUR 3.00.

The residence document contains an electronic chip which holds data on the holder of the permit and on his/her residence in the territory of the SR.

E. Health Insurance and Health Care

Slovakia has a national system of health insurance. All foreign students coming to study in Slovakia are legally obliged to have a health insurance valid for the territory of Slovak Republic and for the whole period of their stay.

 

Students from EU countries citizens are entitled to health care under the same conditions as the Slovak citizens. They have to present European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to the health care provider. The necessary treatment will be covered by Slovak Health insurance company according to tariffs for Slovak citizens, provided that the health care provider has a valid contract with at least one health insurance company. Students from Non EU counties which have not contracted health insurance before leaving their country are required to obtain health insurance in Slovakia. The health insurance has to concluded within 3 working days from collecting the residence document. The approximate costs per month is 50 EUR.

Basic health care is ensured for international students and lecturers. In case of emergency foreigners can appreciate their own travel insurance to cover the high costs for medical services.
