Scope of the study programme

The structure of the study programme and its component subjects, as well as its teachers’ expertise and research experience, allow students not only to prepare for professional praxis. In order to provide students with an integral set of knowledge, competence and skills that represent a pillar of graduates’ profile, the emphasis is placed especially on a deep and compact knowledge from the field of international relations – political and international economic relations, international and European law, foreign policy, history of diplomacy, international organizations and integration processes, security policy, socio-economic regional development, as well as on the development of communication skills in foreign language in relation to the field of study. Study programme consists of different types of courses provided in the study plan below. The total number of credits for the whole period of study is 180. Given that the study programme is in English and includes the participation of foreign universities, it increases students’ language skills and professional preparedness, and enhances reputation of their qualification on the market, as well as the reputation of the Faculty of Political Science and International Relations of Matej Bel University in Banska Bystrica and its partner universities.

Profile of a graduate

The graduate enjoys a compact system of theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of international relations and international politics. This knowledge enables him to identify and formulate specific problems which in terms of their significance require a broader scientific scrutiny and subsequently to deduce conclusions and predict the potential future evolution of these issues. The graduate disposes of a compact system of knowledge related to the methodology of scientific research implemented when dealing with the selected issue of international relations and politics. He is able to correctly apply and combine particular methods and methodological approaches so that the outcomes of his research would lead to compact and logic conclusions with the possibility to further implement them in theory and practice. He demonstrates a wide spectrum of knowledge and competence that enable him to actively contribute to developing a theoretical framework of the discipline.

 

Theoretical knowledge of graduates basically consists of:

a. in the study part:

  • a compact system of theoretical knowledge related to the field of study
  • a compact system of knowledge related to the methodology of scientific research including possibilities and limits of implementation of specific methods and methodological approaches when dealing with a particular issue
  • a compact system of knowledge related to the contemporary development and progress in the theoretical research in the given area
  • a compact system of knowledge related to various aspects of evolution in international relations and politics

b. in the scientific part

  • ability to define and formulate a concrete scientific problem
  • ability to correctly opt for the most convenient methods and methodological approaches in order to fulfil a pre-determined research aim and verify research hypothesis
  • ability to proceed individually and creatively with respect to a pre-determined research aim and intention
  • ability to elaborate high-quality alternative scenarios regarding potential development in international relations
  • ability to verify research hypothesis and subsequently to deduce logic conclusions
  • ability to process partial findings in a compact and logic way as a part of outcomes of doctoral research agenda
  • ability to present main results of undertaken research in a compact and logic way

Practical knowledge of graduates consists of:

  • individual research in the theoretical and practical field focused on the selected area
  • competence for work within domestic as well as international research teams
  • competence for work in various scientific and research institutions at home and abroad
  • competence for work on the ground of universities and other educational institutions
  • competence for work in other areas of the social and economic sector
  • competence for work on the ground of different types of international organizations and institutions

Supplementary knowledge, competence and skills of a graduate includes:

  • ability to carry out and coordinate scientific and research activities
  • ability to resolve efficiently problems and obstacles that may occur over the course of research
  • ability to elaborate compact research outcomes in form of expertises, papers, scientific monographs and other types of publications
  • ability to publish articles in scientific journals with impact factor
  • ability to actively engage in the pedagogic process

Requirements on applicants

For the Doctoral programme, applications are supposed to be sent to the faculty mail, containing:

  • Formal letter of application,
  • Curriculum Vitae,
  • Certified copy of a Master (or an equivalent) degree diploma,
  • Certificate confirming student’s knowledge of English is an advantage,
  • PhD thesis project.

 

The entrance exam consists of the defence of PhD thesis project. (After consultation it could be also via SKYPE call.) The PhD studies entrance exam is focused on verifying the applicant’s capabilities and potential to successfully deal with a particular topic of thesis they aspire to write. The applicant also proposes a PhD thesis project consisting of 10 pages of prescribed form and content (the prescribed formal norm: letter type: Times New Roman, letter size 12, spacing: 1,5, all margins: 2,5 cm, bibliography according to APA). Verification of knowledge of selected foreign languages is also a part of this exam. In case of the International Relations study programme, the entrance exam consists of 2 foreign languages.

Fees

Tuition fee for one school year (2 semesters) is 3 000, - € and it is due to be paid by the date of registration for the study.
