Title and type of study programme

  • Title of the study programme: Political Science
  • Degree of the study: Doctoral study
  • Duration of study: 3 academic years - full time / 4 academic years - part time
  • Academic title: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Scope of the study programme

The structure of the study programme and its component subjects, as well as its teachers’ expertise and research experience, allow students not only to prepare for professional praxis. In order to provide students with an integral set of knowledge, competence and skills that represent a pillar of graduates’ profile, the emphasis is placed especially on a deep and compact knowledge from the field of political science – comparative political science, theory of public power and international relations, as well as on communication skills in foreign language in relation to the field of study. Study programme consists of different types of courses provided in the study plan below. The total number of credits for the whole period of study is 180. Given that the study programme is in English and includes the participation of foreign universities, it increases students’ language skills and professional preparedness, and enhances reputation of their qualification on the market, as well as the reputation of the Faculty of Political Science and International Relations of Matej Bel University in Banska Bystrica and its partner universities.

Profile of a graduate

The graduate enjoys a compact system of theoretical and practical knowledge of political science. This enables him to identify and formulate specific problems which in terms of their significance require a broader scientific scrutiny and subsequently to deduce conclusions and predict the potential future evolution of these issues. The graduate disposes of a compact system of knowledge related to the methodology of scientific research implemented when dealing with the selected issue of political science. He is able to correctly apply and combine particular methods and methodological approaches so that the outcomes of his research would lead to compact and logic conclusions with the possibility to further implement them in theory and practice. He demonstrates a wide spectrum of knowledge and competence that enable him actively contribute to developing a theoretical framework of the given discipline.

The knowledge and competence of graduates basically consist of:

a) Theoretical knowledge and skills

Graduates demonstrate systematic knowledge and competence in the field of political science and they prove a good command of methodological principles in relation to this study programme on the internationally comparable level. They are familiar with the latest political theories, conceptions, models and paradigms combined with analytical research methods. At the same time, they have an adequate overview of the exercise of practical policy. They have a systematic and compact set of knowledge in the field of political science and its relation to related disciplines. Graduates handle all the basic principles and methods of scientific work in the field of political science and project designing: research, legislation, methodic procedures, application in praxis. They are well aware of the past as well as contemporary trends, conceptions and political theories which they are able to apply in the selected area of research. They formulate independently a research problem which they can present objectively and logically in various forms of scientific synthesis.

b) Practical knowledge and skills

Graduates prove competent to conceive, suggest, implement and adapt in an academic way an extensive scientific and research process. They are able to create a piece of work that contributes by its original research to extending borders of knowledge in the given area towards related scientific disciplines, and that merits publication on the national or international scene in form of reviewed monograph. They can apply and creatively develop theories as well as research, evolutionary and innovative approaches in the given field and to create new ones. They have predispositions to solve complex research problems, actively and creatively propose, process and evaluate scientific projects at home and abroad. They are eligible for the position of a scientific and pedagogic employee at scientific institutions and departments as well as for managerial positions in the field of public administration.

c) Critical thinking

The student actively participates in scientific conferences at home and abroad and publishes his findings in scientific journals. He actively acquires new information and knowledge, pursues development trends in science and he is able to critically reflect on results of research undertaken at other institutions. He is capable of synthesis of new and complex ideas. He can observe global development in political science and related fields and identify innovations that he may use to enhance progress within his own discipline by integrating knowledge from various areas of science and research.

d) Communication skills

Graduates are able to communicate with fellow workers in the field of political science and related sciences, wider scientific community and the public as such about the issues concerning not only their own specialisation. They can plan and initiate solutions to complex problems or projects including formulation of aims, means and methods related to the research. They are used to systematically monitor the latest scientific production in their own field. They can work independently as well as within scientific teams. They have predispositions for interdisciplinary and cross-sectional cooperation with similar scientific disciplines. They are guided to present results of their research and popularise them, carry out expertises and evaluate internal and foreign policy, but also to participate in pedagogic activities.

e) Competence in further education

The graduate is expected to actively and creatively contribute to social and cultural progress and development of the knowledge society by participating in the management of social and political processes; acquiring practical experience in the field of science, education and practical political activity; and by acquiring further knowledge, competence and skills especially through active involvement in the modern form of lifelong learning.
