Title and type of study programme

  • Title of the study programme: Security Studies
  • Degree of the study: Master study
  • Duration of study: 2 academic years (full time or part time)
  • Academic title: Master

Scope of the study programme

The structure of the study programme and its component subjects, as well as its teachers’ expertise and research experience, allow students not only to prepare for professional praxis. In order to provide students with an integral set of knowledge, competence and skills that represent a pillar of graduates’ profile, the emphasis is placed on a deep and compact knowledge from the field of national and international security – security policy, security theories, theory and praxis of geopolitics, strategic thinking of great powers, theory of conflicts, military diplomacy, simulations of crisis situations, as well as on the development of communication skills in foreign language in relation to the field of study. The programme as such aims to provide its students with a combination of theoretical approaches and concepts in security and methodological tools of social sciences with practical policy decisions that are closely related to a security policy of a state as well as security environment as such. The main stress is laid on understanding and explaining security in the contemporary world, security policy of the Slovak Republic, Visegrad region, European Union and NATO, in particular. Specific courses deal with different aspects of security studies as well as strategic studies. The aim of the programme is to remain up to date, therefore it counts with a possibility of including courses that will reflect on current development in security and international relations, lectures delivered by experts on security-related topics but also the courses on academic and think tank writing are prepared for students. Study programme consists of different types of courses provided in the study plan below. The total number of credits for the whole period of study (4 semesters) is 120. Given that the study programme is in English and includes the participation of foreign universities, it increases students’ language skills and professional preparedness, and enhances reputation of their qualification on the market as well as the reputation of the Faculty of Political Science and International Relations of Matej Bel University in Banska Bystrica and its partner universities.

Profile of a graduate

The graduate enjoys a compact system of theoretical and practical knowledge. He demonstrates a significant level of competence and skills that enable him to independently and creatively apply acquired theoretical knowledge in different kinds of professions – especially (but not exclusively) those that are related to his academic background. Acquired competence may be a contribution also in professions that do not correspond directly to graduate’s academic profile, yet in this case, the scope of applicability of particular skills depends on the type of his profession and position.

The graduate of the programme is expected to be equipped with the ability to combine theoretical knowledge and practical skills while working in national and/or international institutions dealing with security on national, regional as well as global level. The graduate is able to work independently and creatively, use the skill of teamwork acquired during the course assignments and apply the knowledge and skills offered within the programme. The profile of graduates is conceived so that it enables them to continually pursue the research on the third degree of academic education in the same or related field of study and programme. At the same time, graduates prove competent and eligible for positions in various sectors of social and economic industry (central state administration, local administration, media, private sector).

Theoretical knowledge of graduates basically consists of:

  • acquisition of a compact theoretical and methodological system of knowledge related to the field of study and ability of its subsequent effective application in practice while dealing with practical tasks and assignments during the exercise of a particular profession
  • acquisition of knowledge that enables graduates to specialise in the field of international and national security
  • ability to analyse the development of the system of international relations, define the key factors that influence its development and on this basis to predict and elaborate possible scenarios of its future evolution
  • competence in analysing the internal and foreign-policy development of particular states as the key players in the world political system
  • competence in analysing and monitoring transformation of particular players in international politics in the context of newly emerging security challenges
  • competence in analysing and monitoring the influence of military as well as non-military aspects of security on the transformation of particular players in international relations – especially states

Practical knowledge of graduates basically consists of:
