  • Degree of the study: Master study
  • Duration of study: 2 academic years (full time or part time)
  • Academic title: Master

Scope of the study programme

The structure of the study programme and its component subjects, as well as its teachers’ expertise and research experience, allow students not only to prepare for professional praxis. In order to provide students with an integral set of knowledge, competence and skills that represent a pillar of graduates’ profile, the emphasis is placed especially on a deep and compact knowledge from the field of political science – political theories, political systems, political marketing and communication, current political philosophy, as well as on the development of communication skills in foreign language in relation to the field of study. Study programme consists of different types of courses provided in the study plan below. The total number of credits for the whole period of study (4 semesters) is 120. Given that the study programme is in English and includes the participation of foreign universities, it increases students’ language skills and professional preparedness, and enhances reputation of their qualification on the market as well as the reputation of the Faculty of Political Science and International Relations of Matej Bel University in Banska Bystrica and its partner universities.

Profile of a graduate

The graduate enjoys of a compact system of theoretical and practical knowledge. He demonstrates a significant level of competence and skills that enable him to independently and creatively apply acquired theoretical knowledge in different kinds of professions – especially (but not exclusively) those that are related to his academic background. Acquired competence may be a contribution also in professions that do not correspond directly to graduate’s academic profile, yet in this case, the scope of applicability of particular competence and skills depends on the type of his profession and position.

The graduates’ profile is conceived so that it enables them to continually pursue the research on the third degree of academic education in the same or related field of study and programme. At the same time, graduates prove competent and eligible for positions in various sectors of social and economic industry (central state administration, local administration, media, private sector).

The main base of knowledge and competence of graduates consists of:

  1. Theoretical knowledge and competence - The graduate has a deep and cross-sectional knowledge in the specialised field including relations with related disciplines. He understands theories, methods and approaches used in social sciences, and he proves competent to apply them in practice and in scientific research. He is familiar with the literature related to the field of study, he is able to monitor current trends in political science and to apply knowledge from related disciplines in his own field of study.
  2. Practical knowledge and competence - The graduate is guided to progressively improve his own level of political awareness. He is capable of impartial and objective political analysis, implementation of knowledge, competence and skills when dealing with problems in new or unknown environment and situations that require a multidisciplinary approach. He proves ability to actively acquire and apply new information and subsequently to creatively deal with theoretical and practical tasks. He can work independently with study materials, interpret texts, identify and critically reflect on problems and suggest possible solutions. He is prepared to create, analyse and evaluate projects from the field of political science as well as for interdisciplinary cooperation.
  3. Critical thinking - Graduates are able to interconnect knowledge, identify complexity and express opinion in compliance with social and ethical responsibility also if only limited information is available. On this basis, they can identify those facts and statements of politicians or media that are distorted by either lower level of knowledge or particular interests, and thus they differentiate them from the scientific knowledge. They demonstrate competence in building arguments and counter-arguments and in critically reviewing published articles and books related to the field of study. Graduates formulate their own opinion on different problems of the party and public policy.
  4. Communication skills - Graduates are able to provide their knowledge, conclusions and reflections to the professional as well as laic public. They can write papers outlining their own attitudes and positions on the researched practical or theoretical issues. They have predispositions to participate in discussions and discuss even delicate issues that they can confront in public with critical reservations. They can solve problems, coordinate approaches on the basis of a team or individual work and make decisions responsibly in a dynamic environemnt.
  5. Competence in further education - Graduates are able to apply acquired theoretical knowledge in praxis as well as to reflect theoretically on political reality. They can propose and shape basic conceptions of state policy and work in the pedagogic and research area. As they command the use of methodological tools in social sciences, they are able to undertake scientific collection, evaluation and interpretation of data concerning political activity. They are eligible for managerial positions on various levels of public administration or they may pursue studies on the third degree of academic education.
